A degree and a certification answer different questions. Many programmes will award you credit for the certifications you already hold.

The distinction

Degree or certification first?

A certification proves you can do a specific job now. A degree clears a hiring filter and, in federal and defence contracting, frequently sets your pay band. They are not competing purchases.

For most people transitioning, the order is: certification first, because it is faster, cheaper and gets you employed. Then a degree, part-time, paid for by the GI Bill or an employer, while you are working.

The efficiency comes from doing both at once. Several institutions award substantial credit for certifications you already hold, and for military training recorded on your Joint Services Transcript.

Ask two questions of any admissions office. How much credit do you award for my certifications, and how much for my JST? The answers vary enormously between institutions and are worth thousands of dollars and several semesters.
  • Certifications commonly carry credit: A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, CISSP
  • Joint Services Transcript credit varies by programme, not by school
  • CLEP and DSST examinations can clear general education requirements cheaply
  • Check Yellow Ribbon participation if the GI Bill will not cover full tuition

Not all programmes are equal

Two designations carry real weight when a federal or defence employer reads your application:

  • NSA/DHS CAE-CD — National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense. A meaningful quality signal and a route into some federal scholarship programmes.
  • Regional accreditation — credits transfer, national accreditation often does not. Confirm before you enrol, not after.
